Within the marine-primer range, phosphate primers bond chemically with aluminum and steel. Zinc chromate serves aluminum above or below the waterline; other primer applications include bare metal, steel, iron, fiberglass and wood above water. Zinc cold-galvanizing or zinc-phosphate barriers serve steel and iron, especially welds, above or below water. Those barriers use 95 percent zinc for solvent and abrasion resistance. These are distinctions among the primer types in the range.
